Questions to Ask Your Caregiver in An Interview

You can hire a Caregiver though and agency, or directly, we have used the word agency, which is how we recommend hiring caregivers.

 

Questions to Ask: 

What type of care does this agency provide?

Does the agency accept responsibility for the actions from staff members and employees?

How much experience does this agency have providing elder care?

How does the agency screen caregivers to work with specific clients and their needs?

Does this agency use the service of independent contractors?

Does the agency provide training for the employees? If so how often?

Do the employees undergo a pre employment background check or drug screening?

Who will work with the families to develop an individual care plan for their loved ones? Is this person a licensed professional in the health care field?

If there is an emergency outside of normal business hours how does the agency handle these emergencies?

How are the services provided to the elders monitored? How often will a registered nurse visit the patient? Who is supervising the daily care?

Does the agency pay their fair share of taxes? Are they able to provide worker’s compensation to employees? What other benefits are offered to the employees?

Does the agency handle payroll in house or do they outsource it? How are any issues with payroll handled?

Will I be given a copy of the contract?

Who will notify me in case there is a medical issued with my loved on?

What happens if an employee calls off for their shift?

How can I make changes to the contract if needed?

Who is going to be my main contact at the agency?

Is the agency fully licensed and insured?

“Do you have any certifications? Do you have any a caregiver’s training?

Have you worked as a caregiver before?

Can you tell me about your previous care giving experiences?

Why did leave your last job?

What are the hours you are able to work? What is your availability? If these are the hours I need you to be available, do you have any conflicting responsibilities outside of this job?

Will you agree to sign a notarized document stating you will not accept money, gifts, or or anything from our loved one your caring for or accept anything from anyone else in the family without my approval and a conversation about what is being given?

Are you reliable on a regular basis, and do you make sure to come to work on time and when needed despite, what is going on in your life? There are always exceptions of course, but this is generally speaking.

Do you have a valid driver’s license?

Can you drive, and would be wiling to drive one of our cars?

Are you okay with a 30-Day trial period to make sure that we are a good fit for you and you are a good fit for us? At the end of the 30 days there will be an evaluation as long as we both feel comfortable about the situation we will over you the job. You will also have the option of not continuing if you choose to do so.

Are you able to lift at least fifty pounds? Do you have any physical limitations that we need to be aware of? Can you handle the physical demands of the job?

I have written out a list of things that my parent needs and does what tasks I expect you to be able to do. Pleas go over everything and let me know if you have an issue with anything on the lists, or if you do not understand anything on the list.

Do you have any questions?

What are your expectations for vacations and days off?

Are you okay with schedule changes within reason?

Do you like pets? Do have any allergies to pets?

Do you smoke?

Why do you think you are a good fit for this job?

Do have patience with people who might get angry or upset?

 

Are you able to provide at least two non relative references and one work related reference?

What re your name, telephone number, and address. When is the best time to contact you?

Do you mind keeping a log of what happens so that we all know what is going on with our loved one? It only has to be the major happenings, not necessarily the small stuff. It is something to use your judgment on?

Do you understand that you are not to have anyone come over to our house that is not approved by me?

Are you able to cook?

Why do you want to be a caregiver?

Do mind keeping me posted through the telephone about what is going on with my loved one?

Do you understand that we are hiring you to help us look after our loved one and that we want to be fully involved with what is going on with our loved one? You can contact us at anytime if you have any questions and concerns. Do you understand there are no stupid questions and we are here to help also?

Do you own a car and do you have insurance on the car?

Would you feel comfortable driving our loved ones car and having our loved one in the car?
