Kids that grow up with healthy habits make for healthier adults. Blockages to the blood vessels and heart that lead to heart disease start in childhood. According to the American Heart Association, kids with cardiovascular disease risk factors at age 13 or younger are at risk for developing heart disease as young adults. Here are a few things you can do to keep your family healthy.
Don’t Smoke
Notice I didn’t say ‘don’t smoke around your kids’. It’s not enough to smoke outside, or chew gum after you smoke. The poisonous chemicals in cigarettes get everywhere. If you can smell the smoke, then the chemicals are getting into your body – and your kids. We’re also starting to understand more about ‘third hand smoke’ – residual chemicals and nicotine deposit on carpets and indoor surfaces. This residue mixes with common household pollutants to create a toxic mix.
Add Movement to Your Life
The American Heart Association recommends that people under the age of 20 years get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous aerobic activity every day. Less than 50 percent of 12-to 19-year-olds meet this goal every day. Try to build physical activity in as a family. Park at the far end of the parking lot to increase your steps – or even better – walk! Take a brisk walk after dinner or check out your local community center for physical activity opportunities.
No Fat Isn’t Always Better
Your body needs fat to do its daily functions. Often, low-fat products replace missing fats with chemicals and fillers. Check the label on that low-fat sour cream sometime. You’ll be shocked at the long list of ingredients that are added. Instead, focus on eating healthy fat like avocado, fish, and nuts.
See a Medical Provider Regularly
